WordPress Tutorial: Add Images and Files to Media Library in WordPress

by jupiterjim on November 29, 2011

In this WordPress Tutorial, I show you very explicitly how to add image files to your media library.  The method that I use to add image files is the exact same method you would use to add other file types (such as a PDF file) to your WordPress Media Library once you’ve logged into your WordPress blog or website. You will find some more details and pictures on the media library by clicking on this link WordPress.org

Why should you add files directly into your media library?

Great Question! Well, for one thing, you can add several files at once.  Ok, I just realized that I forgot to show you how to do that in the video tutorial.  It’s very easy, if you are using a PC, you simply press the Control key (CTRL) on the lower left hand side of your keyboard, and click on all the files you want to upload.  So you end up selecting more than one image or file to upload. Very easy. If you are on a Mac, you would probably press the Command (Apple) key or a similar method.  I don’t use Mac’s so I’m not sure!

If you want to add an image to a sidebar widget, you cannot upload the image directly into the sidebar widget, like you can upload an image directly to a blog post or page.  You need to first upload the image to the media library and get the URL for the image so you can copy and paste the URL for that image into the proper place in the widget.  If that has confused you, then just watch the wordpress video tutorial I created that shows you how to add an image to a sidebar widget.

If you want to use the proper method of adding an image to the top of a post or adding an image to the top of a page in a WordPress site that uses the Thesis Theme, then you will need to copy and paste the URL that points to that image. And the easiest way to do that is to first upload the image to the media libary.

If you want to add a link to a FREE e-book (in a PDF format) on a post or page, you will first need to add or upload that PDF file to the media libary.  If you subscribe to my blog now, you will get two FREE e-books in PDF format on blogging and SEO tips!

I do that sometimes Jim, directly placing the image link on the sidebar but most of the time, I uploaded the image on my blogger account and get the URL of the image then to the sidebar.. Impressive tip Sir Jim :D

Jim,
You are a mind reader. Just yesterday I was tinkering with a photo by editing it and because I had saved the file name when I first uploaded it and used that on a post I was shocked that the picture didn’t show… Now I know why – because the filename changed. Geez! Thanks for the great video!

This is a great tutorial Jim! I’m so glad that i found your site- it’s a true treasure trove of information.

I’m admittedly not so savvy when it comes to WordPress- I know the basics so I’m thrilled to have a new resource and a new go-to-guy!

Love this tutorial, Jim. Simple, straightforward, easy to follow, and useful. There is a plug-in I use for grabbing images from sites and saving it directly to my media library, skipping the downloading to your pc and then uploading to the media library part. I think it’s called Grab and Save. Very useful if you need to grab an image (copyright-free of course) from a site to your media library.
