WordPress Tutorial: Add Facebook Social Plugin for “Comments” to your WordPress Blog

by jupiterjim on February 17, 2012

In this WordPress Tutorial I show you how to add a Facebook Social Plugin for “Comments” to your WordPress blog or website regardless of which WordPress theme you are using.  You do NOT need to be using the Thesis Theme to follow this WordPress Video Tutorial or to use this Facebook Social Plugin. This is a really cool plugin that will allow people to comment on your blog post or page and share it on their Facebook Wall at the same time!  That makes it easier for the person commenting on your blog and gives your blog post so much more exposure and visibility. You can find all the details for the Facebook Social Plugin for Comments here in written form.  However, my video shares some critical information with you that I could not find on the Facebook web page about sharing the individual posts.

Get your Facebook Application ID first!

Before you install this plugin, however, you need to create a Facebook Application or Facebook App and get an App ID. It’s sounds complicated but it’s really very simple and easy to do.  I have created a short video that shows you step-by-step how to create a Facebook Application and get an App ID here.   Once you create that Facebook Application and get that App ID you can come back here and watch this video to complete the steps.  It’s all so much easier than it sounds and my videos make it all very easy to follow. Enjoy!

Hi Jim,
You always make great tutorials, I read your previous post about adding facebook comments on Thesis and of course this for any wordpress theme, eventhough I didn’t have the time to add facebook comments on my blog hopefully I will add them during this month, thanks for sharing…

Kostas,

It will take less than 10 minutes to do, except maybe the backup of the header.php or custum_functions.php (for Thesis). Good Luck!

Jordan,

If you type in some of the links in the video, it will bring you to facebook social plugins at facebook and there should be information to answer your question there.

Yesterday, somebody asked me the easiest way to do this exact thing. I probably could have figured it out eventually, but it is so nice to be able to watch a very well done tutorial and get the results I am looking for the first time.

Thank you very much Jupiter Jim, I know this saved me a bunch of headaches.

I find your post very informative and helpful one to those novices in social media. It’s been a long time that my site is not quite productive in the sense that I don’t have a time in doing productive decisions. Thanks for sharing this word Press tutorial video clips, I will look forward to apply it and thanks for allowing me to introduce my site also related in tutorial.

Hi Jim,

I had this on my blog at one time but not only did it slow the load time down, which I found so annoying, I started getting error messages and the comment section just quit working altogether. I finally just threw my hands up and got rid of it. Hopefully they’ve improved it since then.

Sure others will find this very helpful and hope they have so much better luck than I did.

I was using Facebook comments on my site as well as the Wordpress commenting system. Although I agree that offering the Facebook system does create a potential for more traffic as a result of the comment, there is a trade off. Particularly in my market where my visitors may already have a website and are looking to not only engage my site, but also build back links. I have found that offering the Wordpress system only in conjunction with CommentLuv have increased my visitor engagement and brought me a great deal of quality comments.

Its not easy to explain basic coding to add to blogs, for many newbies easily get information overload. But your video was simple to understand.

Also, I use to use the facebook social plugin on one of my older niche sites. This allows me to get social traffic and easy backlinks that help me keep my rankings in google.

Thanks for the information. I was on a site yesterday. It was a thank you page for subscribing to newsletter. The guy had a video saying thanks and then ask to comment. The comments went straight to Facebook.
I wondered how it was done. Thanks for sharing. I didn’t know it was this easy.

J Jim,
As so many others have posted, this is just what I was looking for. I’m still unclear as to whether to leave my old comments in place and add FB comments or remove the other comments. Which do you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Rick,

I would definitely NOT delete your old comments. As to whether to allow comments AND FB comments in the future, that’s up to you. I would leave both, if I were you. Good Luck!

This is nice tutorial. It’s one of those things that you think you know how to do, but in reality, you really need a nice walk-through to get it done.

Hi Jim! Well this tutorial clears up so much in my head. I was toying with the idea of doing this, but now I fully understand it. My blog is still being re-vamped. I have just changed my opt-in and now working on my pages. This is a great add-on to it.
This will be bookmarked!
Thanks, Donna

I was just thinking about doing this the other day. What stops me, though, is wondering if people have an option to do the Facebook OR the WordPress, or whether everyone has to go through Facebook.

Pastor Sherry,

You can use either or both. No problem. Whichever you prefer. Great question though.
