by jupiterjim on March 21, 2012

In this thesis theme tutorial,  I show you the specific steps necessary to backup the custom_functions.php file used in your WordPress Thesis Theme 1.8 blog or website.  This Video Tutorial also applies to the latest version of the Thesis Theme 1.8.4.

This video also shows you how to backup any WordPress file on your server regardless of the theme you are using.

You can use this technique to backup your custom.css file as well, just as easily.

Here are my other three FileZilla Video Tutorials:

  1. Download and Install FileZilla
  2. How to use FileZilla
  3. Back up your entire WordPress blog using FileZilla

With all modesty, I believe that this video is the best thesis theme tutorial on this subject of backing up the custom_functions.php file that I have seen.

I also have a link to a page on my site dedicated to a FREE WordPress Backup Plugin that I highly recommend to backup all of your WordPress files and databases.

This is a great tutorial. Now I can delete the plugin I use to backup my WP site when I do any updating.

Thanks,

This information and tutorial are very helpful! I am using Filezilla for creating my blogs but I never use it to back up my blogs. Thanks for this!

It’s so funny Jim – I have such a mental block about technical stuff, just reading your post title caused my brain to freeze! Seriously awesome tutorial – you are a terrific teacher!

Hey Jim, this is a great tutorial that I have bookmarked. Every time I try to install something, I break it. So I will have my husband, David Merrill do this for both him and I. As you know we are a team. he usually takes care of my plug ins even if it is a no brainer lol!
I must say that even I could get a grip on this tutorial and that is saying a lot because my brain doesn’t work this way ha ha.
Thanks again,
Donna Merrill

Jim,
I have created sites since years ago and now blogs. I never thought about utilizing this system. I have my own domain of course. The content is clean and no selling on my sites.

I can see the great easy in putting this to work for me. I have now managed to only be the one admin on all my sites. This seems to be a way to help all my vast numbers of new members create a stable blog.

Jim, your information is always right on track. Love that list of the daily sites you visit. I have my two locations and they work great being in TSA they share the love at no cost. Now, that is priceless.

Jim your one of our great technical visionaries in this global industry. I am honored to be in your circle of ones that appreciate all the support you give day in and out. Keep up the wonderful passion for creating and helping others become empowered to do more in their lifetime.

Thank you Jim, for a really clear and concise explanation of how to backup my site. I don’t use Thesis, but having a way to use FZ to do the backup is a really good idea. I don’t know why I never thought of it before, maybe because I just thought about FTP as more of an uploading technology instead of a duplicating technology.

But this makes a lot of sense to me, and its easy. Even better. :-)

Wonderful video Jim!

My first visit to your blog after you came over, and this surely is a wonderful resource for anyone wanting any kind of information on WordPress, Thesis etc.

I have also recently switched over from my Bloggers account to Wordpress, and for me that switch was surely an uphill task! I wish I had this resource earlier :)

However, my writing blog is on Thesis, which again is taking me sometime due to its codes etc. I would surely be looking around your blog for more information on that.

Thanks for sharing :)

Harleena,

your blog is another blog with high quality content and I’m glad that CommentLuv Premium is able to give bloggers like you a backlink to help your rankings and to build awareness of your site. When I started out with WordPress a little over two years ago, I had almost nothing to teach me. Nothing in WordPress is really that hard. So I was thinking if I could just show people how to do it, it would save them lots of time and energy. So now I have over 10 hours of WordPress and Thesis Video Tutorials on my blog here and on my YouTube account. Contact me if you need any help with Thesis. The 410 Thesis Manual I am selling is also a tremendous resource for Thesis Users.

Great idea to do a video for people new to Filezilla Jupiter Jim. It’s such an easy tool to use, I really like it. I think I’ve been using it for around 7 or 8 years now, seems like that long anyway:-)
