I like using this function and then inserting a code to show latest post at the bottom or wherever I specify just to keep Google happy (not to mention the readers too). I like your website. The static page feature is one of those little things that makes Wordpress such a giant in the industry, Jim.
I think, sometimes, WP is so simple that people overlook its power.
The static page is a good example. I personally think it’s best reserved for personal branding rather than blatant promotion. And I believe that what you choose for your static home page will deeply effect the SEO ranking of your site.
So, while it’s easy to do, give weighty consideration to its implications.

Hello Jim, great overview very helpful for people new to WordPress.
I’m having an issue now with Digg Digg after upgrading to WordPress 3.5.1 I got in touch with Joel at Buffer App that own Digg Digg and I learned it is not really being supported at the moment I really LIKE Digg Digg…. It’s just the FB share icon is not pulling through the post images like it used to!
