How to Change Font Size and Font Family in WordPress Posts and Pages

Ultimate TinyMCE Plugin

This short WordPress Video Tutorial will show you how to easily change the font size and font family within a single blog post or page using the Ultimate TinyMCE plugin!

[Update]  A few people have left comments below for this article saying, ” 1. just type your post or page in Microsoft Word, 2. change font size and family in the MS Word document, 3. paste that formatted text into your WordPress blog post or page and all will be well.”

I tried doing that and it didn’t work.

FONT SIZE WAS NOT PRESERVED!

How to Paste MS Word into WordPress

I lost some of the formatting.  Whether I just pasted the text in directly or used the proper method to paste the text from an MS Word document into a WordPress blog post or page. (this links to another article on my blog here.)

Please share your experiences with pasting MS Word into your WordPress blog post or your experiences with The Ultimate TinyMCE plugin so other people can know whether they should try it or not.  Thanks!

  • Thumb up! Thanks for the video. I haven’t seen it before… I have never been able to figure it out. What I usually do is write in MS Word, copy and paste. Careful of the size, any long paragraphs over a 12 font size come out different sizes.

  • Jim – thank you so much! My mouth was literally hanging open when watching this. I have learned so much through your videos, and this one gives me the versatility that I’ve been looking for.

Thanks for making your videos easy to watch, easy to understand and certainly pertinent! Off to edit my papercrafting blog that is definitely becoming a much better wordpress blog thanks to you!

  • Great video as always Jim! I do have a concern about adding yet another plugin I heard this is not something that I want to be doing? Can you please share your thoughts with us on this?

I have started using Windows Live Writer when writing my blog post lately and this does have a place to edit the font size as well as the font family. I have found it very easy to use to compose and manage my blog posts.. What are your thought on using this?

      Chery,

That is a totally great question! I used to use Live Writer so I know exactly what you’re talking about. I’ve been doing blogs for 3.5 years now and you’re the only person I’ve met that actually uses it. I’m not at all trying to say there’s anything wrong with Live Writer. It’s probably easier doing layouts and stuff on Live Writer. It just seemed too complicated to be teaching my clients how to set it up and use it.

And yes I HATE adding plugins. But this plugin is always kept up to date and is the code is well written, it has always worked smoothly for me and I consider it an essential plugin.

But if Live Writer works for you, feel free to stick with that.

      Thanks for the question!

  • Hi Jim,
Wonderful tutorial. Thanks to you for coming up with wonderful stuff like this to help newbies like me from time to time.
BTW, I just became the 600th person to LIKE your blog :), though I wonder how I missed doing that earlier.

  • Hi Jim,
thank you for the great tutorial.
It was good to see how the Ultimate Tiny MCE plugin works. So far I have been using the TinyMCE advanced and I am fascinated with all the extra things you can do with it like tables.
Do you know how the two plugins compare?

    Much appreciated!

Hi Jim, This was great, thank you. Most people dont cover thi,s and it took a long time for me to find it.
    BUT
I just had a restore on one of my sites–AND IT DOESNT WORK ANYMORE! It doesnt allow for the tool bar or the text to show up at all on pages and posts. I have deleted and reinstalled. I felt like i lost my best friend.
I am using “advanced” now, but it doesnt have all the sizes like UTMCE. No 16, which is whta I use.

I dont know why WP doesnt have that in the tool bar. It is so important.
    So Thanks! Mary

  • Hey Jim,

Like most people who are not really into WordPress options, changing font sizes through WordPress is not an issue since they already have a complete write-up in Microsoft Word that is ready to Copy and Paste. That is one of the most common thing that I do when I post an article in my blog. But then again, I guess it’s not bad to learn a thing or two on WordPress except for clicking post it. Maybe changing font size with WordPress is a good start.

      Farrell,

Thanks for your comment. Your comment prompted me to amend my blog post. Font Size is NOT preserved when copying from MS Word into WordPress. That’s why you need this plugin.

Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment!

  • I would never had thought to create any article within my dashboard. My method and one i have always coached was to create it on your desktop in word. Then that way you can save each article for review and continue a series without being online.

This method you show is great and then you can back it up by exporting the article to your computer. Any method has the same end result yet your method has steps to take to add plug-ins to you blog.

No one way to accomplish a goal is wrong or write. This is a great example of what ever method makes you comfortable use.

Amazing job with walking us through this method that I had never given any thought to using.

You are one of our insightful coaches in our industry and I always love visiting your site knowing I will leave with learning new methods.

      William,

You are a great coach and you are 100% correct in telling people to write their blog posts in MS Word and then copy to WordPress as long as they use the proper method of pasting MS Word into WordPress that I have demonstrated on the video that I linked to in the article.

Having a copy of all your blog posts in MS Word on your computer is great advice!

But if you really want to change font size (and maybe font family — I need to check on that) then you need the Ultimate TinyMCE plugin.

Thanks for dropping by and your heartfelt comment and compliment!

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks for the video. After you shared the Ultimate TinyMCE plugin, I decided to give it a try. I already had another plugin which allows me to change the font and family, but it seemed cumbersome. So I uninstalled the old one and replaced it with your suggestion.

Also I use Windows Live Writer, but I prefer having easy buttons accessible after I have posted a draft to my blog. Sometimes I want to make changes and I don’t have to go back to the writer if I’m well equipped in the dashboard. Thanks Jim!

  • Ultimate Tiny MCE is a really powerful tool for WordPress. It works well, too, in conjunction with Shortcodes Ultimate: I use both of these for my posts.

My own procedure is to write my post in Libre Office (I don’t want to pay for MS Office, so I use the free version), then copy and paste into NoteTab Light (works like Notepad, but lets me have several items at a time rather than just one). That removes all the formatting codes that Office puts there.

I then copy and paste to WordPress and use Ultimate Tiny MCE to format, putting in headers, color, emphasis, pictures, etc.

It sounds like a long process, but if I keep the formatting part out of Office and do it all in WordPress it’s pretty quick – just copy and paste twice.

  • BTW – I just saw Mary’s comment. UTMCE recently added some new features. You may need to review your settings, since a lot of the advanced features are now turned off by default. I add the ones I use (including shortcodes) in Row 4.
    I hope that helped.

  • I’d be lost without TinyMCE.

You make the font size and family function easy to understand, Jim, and I think anyone who has posted to WP will truly appreciate this.

The copy and paste from word programs is so basic that you really can’t style your posts without TinyMCE or something similar.

Thanks for the tutorial and that makes it simple to use!

  • Jim, I truly appreciate you and other WP experts. I usually copy/paste from google drive into my WP blog. But I don’t always like the way it looks. So, with that being said, your tutorial is very, very helpful for anyone who wants to fiddle with font and family on their blog posts.

      Lynn,

Even if all the sizing and formatting remained, which it usually doesn’t, if you want to change font size and family inside WP, you can’t do it without this plugin or one like it. Of the similar plugins, this one is the best. Just look at the ratings! Thanks for sharing and dropping by!

  • I use Ultimate Tiny MCE (the free version) and I absolutely love it. But to tell you the truth if I wasn’t looking to make my stuff stand out a bit more with customizations it would definately be overkill.

That being said, if you decide to use it I recommend getting a couple of the add-on’s that the developer has for sale. They have really allowed me to have my blog stand out a bit with different effects that you really don’t see everywhere.

This also allows me to break up my content without having to put in tons of pictures and header tags.

  • This is great for the novice user. I never use visual mode and most of the time, I am in a habit to code my different fonts. Yeah, I don’t do that the simple way…lol

However, I have used that plugin and the Advanced TinyMCE plugin for clients that really needed it.

      Nile,

First of all, thanks for dropping by! I know you are already very busy with your great website and blog about WordPress stuff! Love it! And, yes, for people who cannot hand code XHTML and CSS with a piece of paper and a pencil, LIKE YOU, then The Ultimate TinyMCE plugin is Best. I have had some problems with conflicts with other plugin using Advanced TinyMCE, which is why I strongly recommend The Ultimate TinyMCE plugin. And you can see the excellent ratings it gets from reviewers on http://wordpress.org/ website.

Hope you have a great Memorial Day!

At first I thought of logging in to my back office and follow along but then I decided not to do so because it is better to watch everything first to understand more.

Will be doing it after I share your post :-)

Thank you for a fantastic video tutorial about this plug in.

  • I find the easiest way to change the font size and family, is to type in the little bit of CSS code required, onto the “text” tab in the editor. However, I know that the majority of people don’t want to do that.

I haven’t used Word for Windows to change font size, but I did copy and paste from Word a few times, to get nicely formatted tables in my blog post. And it worked well.

  • Jim, I’ve been using MCE for a while now. I also discovered that I can expand to many more fonts by copying a sentence in a particular font from Windows Live Mail, and pasting it into a WordPress page. It works with most fonts, although I’ve also found that when you do that, you lose the spell check feature.
