wordpress 3.6 Update

What are the new Features?

Kimberly Castleberry just wrote a great blog post summarizing about 6 new features included in WordPress 3.6.   Check out her blog post here:   Introducing WordPress 3.6 – New Features Announcement!
The 2-minute video below gives you a great visual overview of the new features in WordPress 3.6.

When Should I Update to WordPress 3.6 ?

WordPress Expert, Kimberly Castleberry suggests waiting exactly one week before updating to the latest version of WordPress.

How do I Update to WordPress 3.6?

I have an excellent blog post on how to update to WordPress 3.4.2.   In that blog post I also have a Video on the proper way to update to WordPress 3.4.2.   Even though the instructions in that blog post and video are for an earlier version of WordPress, all the steps for updating WordPress are EXACTLY the same!

Remember to Backup Your Site First!

Sometimes updating WordPress does NOT go smoothly.  It can cause problems, sometimes.   Your best defense is to please, please backup your site before you update your WordPress installation.

If you can afford to pay for a backup plugin, my #1 choice is practically considered to be the industry standard, and that would be BackupBuddy. That’s what I use to backup all my own sites.  It will  backup the WordPress “files” and the WordPress MySQL database at the same time.  NOT all backup plugins do that!

WordPress Expert, Nile Flores, has an excellent post on some of the best ways to backup your WordPress blog and website (including links to free backup plugins).

Please Share Your Experiences with Us!

Please, share your experiences with us.  Have you ever updated your WordPress site before?  How did it go?  What backup plugin did you use?   Do you plan on updating to WordPress 3.6 anytime soon?

  • Hi Jim,
yes, Kim is certainly on the ‘ball’ when it comes to the latest information.
I appreciate your suggestions and will pass it on.

Doing a back up first is great advice.
I have had a page come up once about ‘no data received’ and I was so glad to know that I had a back up. It was all ok, still I would have been a lot more stressed if I didn’t have backed it up first.

Thank you for your post and the extra links.
    To enjoyable blogging!

  • I had no problem whatsoever with my sites when I upgraded them. Of course there are some complaints of plugins that no longer work, but that happens with every update. I love the new features, especially the new media enhancements. Looking forward to playing with it more!

  • It’s funny…when I went to update, my site was inaccessible to me for a few minutes. I really didn’t understand the WP updates can be so tricky. I did have the discipline to backup my site beforehand, but it never occurred to me to wait a week while they work out any kinks in the new release. That was the most important takeaway for me – having patience. Great article, friend!

      Christi,

Yes, the updates seem to be going fine for those who did it. But it’s still nice to let the plugin developers update their plugins, if possible.

      Thanks for dropping by!

      • Yes, there seems to be some issues now that I jumped into update my site right away. There are lots of freeze times and sometimes now I can add pictures only by the copy & paste method. I can not upload new pics into the library.

That is the huge problem I have with the update.

Thanks Jupiterjim you are one of my sources. I actually go to your site and see if Kim or Nile has any article on my issue also. Between you and them I have been doing well.

  • I think the best guideline wouldn’t be to back up every week, but every few posts. The point, after all, is not to lose important data. Comments are nice and all, but it’s the posts you really don’t want to lose. I say back up after posting anything that took you more than a few hours to produce, be that a single evergreen post or several smaller ones.

  • jupiterjim, my blog is still on Wordpress 3.5.2 and I am afraid of updating it to 3.6 version. The reason behind is that my blog has a plugin named “WP super cache” and last time when i updated to the new version of Wordpress, my blog got vanished and stopped working by showing a blank page. I can’t delete this sh*t plugin because the same thing happens. Please help, i don’t want to be on 3.5.2, because i want to make my WP more secured.

  • Being a former IT geek, I usually wait for approximately two months before upgrading. I do back up my blogs before upgrading and, fortunately, have never experienced any problems (including with plugins) afterwards.

  • Hey Jim!

Thanks for spreading the word and warning people to back up before they update.
I also followed Kim’s advice. Well I always do lol.

Actually, I never touch these things myself because I have a great way of breaking my blog. Instead, I hire Kim or if she is too busy someone else to do it for me.

I can understand how it is done and do appreciate you writing about this. I’ll spread the world to those that are “trigger happy” when it comes to updates. Don’t want them to run into trouble and this will certainly help.

  • Hi Jim,

Many thanks for your update and I really enjoyed the little video explaining the updates. The new saving feature is great , if one gets distracted and forgets to save ones work.

I agree with Kim’s advice about the timing for updating wordpress.

You do offer very valuable advice for the online community on this site.

  • Yes, I did backup my backup!

It works great yet my problem was with inserting new pictures for my articles and that has not corrected itself with trying all sorts of techniques.

I have been able to copy & past pictures yet the fall off after awhile with the method.

Before upgrading all went well and had not this problem so I will search high and low to correct this issue. No other issues with upgrading.

Thanks again for all the great team effort and I do appreciate each of you dearly.

  • Yes, I always keep my site updated and I’ve upgraded to 3.6. I follow Kim’s advice as well in terms of waiting a week. I use the online backup for WordPress plugin, which backs up my files and database. I’ve never had any trouble with any updates.

WP just gets better and better. I love it. I remember years ago, back in the early 90′s I wantde to start blogging but you needed to know HTML using WP back in those days, so it’s so easy today to get started.

  • Hi Jim,

I know about the one week rule. I usually wait for more than a week before updating Wordpress. Also, I check to see what others have experienced with the new version.

Backup before updating? Sometimes yes. Usually, I forget to do this. All my updates went well.

I use Wordpress database backup, Export option in wordpress and PhpMyAdmin for the database.

    Have a wonderful day

  • Hey Jim, we are experiencing some sing-in difficulties being I host my own site. Now, since I updated this take several attempts to sign-in than one can know.

There are certain times during the day which it will allow access to my Dashboard like it should. Yet, for the last two weeks I can not access it for sometime.

Would this have to do with updating or something wrong with my hosting area and the upgrade?
William Amis recently posted..Take Your Time!My Profile

  • It’s important, Jim, to keep updated, but it’s important that we do it the right way.

It’s easy to throw caution to the wind (as I’ve been guilty of far too often) and just click the “update” without taking the time to do the recommended backups.

Thanks for the good suggestions about backups, and the helpful links to the resources that can help us get the job done right.

      David,

You are so right. It’s soooooo tempting to just throw caution to the wind and hit that “update’ button. I had a problem doing that one time. It scared me! So now I never update without AT least backing up my site first!

I just have too much to lose with my blog, as do you! You’ve got tons of useful articles on your blog! Hope you enjoy the new place that you and Donna are living!

  • I don’t know what I’d do without blogging friends such as you and Kim. I put off updating for the longest time this time, finally updating a week or two ago when Kim sent out an email saying it needed to be done immediately. And it’s folks like you who tell us HOW to do it, because as many bloggers have discovered, you can’t just update without taking precautions first. My blog is updated, and all is well. :)
