WordPress Tutorial: How to Add H2, H3 tags to Blog Posts for SEO

H1, H2, H3 tags for blog posts by Deepak Singh

H1, H2, H3 tags change font sizes by Deepak Singh at blogtechnics.com

In this WordPress tutorial I show you the proper way and the easy way to add the  H1 and H2 HTML tags to your blog post to make it easier to read for your followers and to improve the Search Engine Optimization and, therefore, the Search Engine rankings of your blog post!

Deepak’s Article on H2 tags

I would like to now refer you to this great article by Deepak Singh entitled: “How to Use H1, H2, H3 & H4 Heading Tags on WordPress Blog”  I strongly encourage you  to please take a look at that blog post.  It is one of the simplest, yet most thorough articles on how exactly to properly use all these HTML tags to improve the quality of your blog posts.  Deepak’s article was the inspiration for my blog post and video on H1, H2, H3 tags.

Highlights of Deepak’s Article on Tags

  1. Use only one H1 tag per post (usually for the title of the post)
  2. Try to limit use of H2 tags to 2 to 5 times per post.
  3. H3 tags should be used for subsections of H2 tags.
  4. H4, H5, H6 tags should be used in sidebar and footer widgets.
  5. Use keywords in between H1, H2, H3 tags without “stuffing the keywords”

Why use H2, H3 tags in posts?

  1. Those tags make your blog posts easier to read.
  2. Those tags help improve the Search Engine Optimization of your blog posts.
In my junior year at college, I wrote a paper on speed reading.  For that paper, I read a 300-page book on speed reading.  I learned about things called saccades which are the rapid eye movements that both eyes make in the same direction when we read a word, sentence, paragraph or page.   One of the most important things I learned from writing that paper is that, because of these saccades,  most people just skim when they read.   And if you read any studies on how people “read” blog posts and pages on the Internet these days, it’s the same thing, only worse — most people just skim your blog post, they do not read it!

So when you break up your blog posts into sections by using H2 and H3 tags, you bring the “reader’s” attention to the words you think are important in your post AND you break your blog post up into smaller sections that are easier to read or skim, thereby helping your reader gain more information from your post or article.

So H2, H3 tags make it easier to read?

According to this article on How People Read on the Web people just skim pages, they don’t read them, so use your H2 and H3 tags accordingly!

The truth is, people are going to skim and scan all the lovely content you’ve written, looking for something (a keyword, a header perhaps?) that catches their attention or matches the reason they’re visiting your website in the first place.

In the following video I talk about viewing the source code of a blog post or web page. Well, it’s going to depend on your browser. It’s extremely easy and is a simple matter of clicking on a drop down menu on your browser.  To get specific instructions type something like this into Google: “view source code on FireFox browser” and links to the very simple instructions for your particular browser will show up aplenty.  If you are using Google Chrome browser (my favorite) you can “right click” on text on a page and click on “inspect element” from the drop down menu, as an alternative method.

  • Wonderful info Jim!

I do use H1 H2 and the other tags on my posts, but I never know that you should or could use H4, H5, H6 tags in sidebar and footer widgets- this sure is news to me. But how do we make the comments, sidebars, or footers as H4, H5, or H6? I guess may be you can do so through some codes or something. Need to check on it :)

    Thanks for sharing :)

      Harleena,

the H4, H5, H6 tags are usually built into the title of the sidebar and footer widgets so you don’t have to do anything, but if you do, use them not H1, 2, 3.

      Thanks for your comment!

  • Great stuff as always. Did not know that H2 and H3 tags make the text SEO friendlier, which is all-important!!

  • I am using H1, H2 and H3 a lot as you described in this post, but I don’t think that I have ever been using H4, H5 and H6. Nice tip to use them in Sidebars and footer. I will consider that for sure.

  • I appreciate your effort for writing this tutorial.

It’s amazing how many webmasters or so called “seo experts” still don’t know the proper use of heading tags. First, many people forget they aren’t just used to inject keywords onto your web page but rather to “structure” the content so a search engine and web visitor know what the web page is about.

Good to see more blog posts aimed at the proper use of header tags.

  • Hi Jim,

This is a very informative post and tutorial. I always use the H1, H2, and H3 tags for optimizing, and I agree that they add so much eye appeal to the post. Using H4, H5, and H6 for the sidebar is something I didn’t know…thanks for sharing it. I think your discussion about saccades is very interesting. We naturally skim and check certain words to validate why we are reading a particular article or section of a post and using the heading tags makes a huge difference! Thanks.

  • Hey Jim,
Funny how I should come upon this at a time when I am playing with these tags. I’ve been using H1 for titles, and H3’s to break up categories. I have been using h2’s when I list topics. Hope I’m on the right track.
    I enjoyed you clarifying this.

  • Jim I just started using these tags. It was such a headache for me to understand and some of the information I found made confusing. Your post clarified for me how to use the H3 and so on. Thanks

  • Hi Jim, I had never analysed the use of different header tags like that! I’ve always just used the ones I think look the best. What you say about people reading mostly headings is certainly true for me. If I see a very long blog post with hardly any headings, I really struggle to read it all, and usually give up before I’m finished.

  • In addition to the deep role they play in good site structure (and the speculated role they play in SEO) I also recently found out that Header tags are essential for helping the blind navigate our sites. They function as an accessibility feature which the blind are able to step from header to header to find the item on the page that they need. Keith, a friend of mine who is blind, sent me an audio as he did a walk-through for me of how he “sees” a webpage and it’s very enlightening! I’ll have to share that sometime!

      Kimberly,

That is a great insight. Thanks for bringing “website accessibility” home with a real live example of how making your site more accessible really helps real people who have problems with their sight and their vision. People with good vision often forget the importance of trying to make their site easy to navigate and accessible to ALL.

And, as you say, using the proper header tags really helps for proper site structure for those who have normal vision.

And, yes, I would love to hear that audio sometime when you have time to share it with us.

Thanks so much for dropping by!

  • Just to add some more information. “H” in CSS/HTML stands for “Heading”. What is being discussed is how to create different variations of Headings. All of these variations are ideal for a blog’s SEO technique that can help a website owner to get more and more readers into his/her website.
