Hi Jim, I know that I have that plug in. Thanks for the info, I set up my blog a while back so would have to go back and check for myself if that is all set up that way. The techy part I have outsourced cause it just causes me stress. But when you make it this easy to understand, I may get brave and start learning some more!! Thanks~!

    Hi Jim:

I don’t use this particular plugin but I use the XML Sitemap Generator. I am not sure if there are any huge differences in the two. I have found though that since using it that I have had way more traffic from the search engines.

    • jupiterjim Sep 18, 2011, 12:21 am

The Google XML Site Generator was out of date with the latest version of WP for a while which I didn’t like. The BWP Google XML Sitemap gives you a little more control as in my preference. I guess they are both good when up to date.

  • Peter Fuller Sep 1, 2011, 12:28 pm

    Hey Jim

    Excellent tutorial.

I use Google XML Sitemaps myself. How does that compare to Better WordPress Google XML Sitemap?

    • jupiterjim Sep 18, 2011, 12:23 am

They are both good. I prefer BWP Google XML Sitemap and heard it was a little better. The most important thing is to make sure that your version stays up to date with the current version of WordPress.

  • Ron Sep 4, 2011, 6:57 pm

It’s been a long time searching for this blog. I have to try creating this one. Very good info on how to create a better wordpress Google XML sitemap. I should believe in this that this will really help me how to improve my blog.

  • Paul Reimers Sep 6, 2011, 8:07 pm

    Thanks for the tutorial,

A lot of people who get started doing SEO online can overlook a having a good sitemap. Things like having a good sitemap as well as making sure that the content can be scanned as text (the copy and paste test) and not in Flash are important.

  • Loren Greig Sep 7, 2011, 10:44 am

    Hi Jim,

Great detailed video tutorial. I use Google XML Sitemap but after going through your video I plan to give Better WordPress XML Sitemap a try and will be using your easy to follow tutorial to set it up. It will be interesting to compare any differences. Thanks a bunch Jim.

    • jupiterjim Sep 18, 2011, 1:51 am

Yes, they are both good plugins but I do think that I give the edge to the BWP XML Sitemap Plugin.

So have you had a chance to install it, yet?

      I hope so.

Keep me posted on your experience with installing and using it, ok?

      Thanks for your comment!

I am glad you switched. They are both good plugins but I do think the BWP XML Sitemap plugin gives you more options and controls.

As for Thesis Theme, it’s the best! It’s the only one I use! I have about 30 video tutorials on the Thesis Theme on my blog and YouTube Channel if you are interested.

    Hi Jim,

Creating an XML site map was one of the very first things I learned when I started using Wordpress as my CMS platform of choice. I had learned the importance of this tool, making it easy for Google search engine bots to find and archive your content so it gets noticed, by using other platforms and site builder programs.

An essential plugin, and when it is correctly configured it can give your content a lot more free attention from the search engines.

Technical stuff confuses me but you have made it easy to understand. Thanks so much, it couldn’t have come on a more timely basis for me.

I hope so! Have a great weekend!

  • Lee Silverstein Sep 11, 2011, 10:08 pm

I’ve been using Google XML Sitemaps plugin. Do you recommend switching to BWP?

    • jupiterjim Sep 18, 2011, 1:21 am

If you are motivated, I would switch. They are both good plugins but I’ve heard the code is more effecient in the BWP plugin and I do believe it gives you more control and options of your XML sitemap. The more popular Google XML Sitemap generator plugin took way too long to update to the latest version of WordPress in my opinion.

I believe they are both good plugins though.

Great tips! I have to admit that I do not use thesis. Plus I have done quite of bit of personalization on some the free themes I use. But I love you tutorial on how to create a google xml sitemap.

    • jupiterjim Sep 18, 2011, 1:18 am

Thanks for the positive comments on my tutorial. When you get a chance, please click on the link in my nav menu “thesis theme” and you will see why I only work with the Thesis Theme.

When you upgrade most WordPress themes, your customizations are personalizations are overwritten, never to be seen again. Not so with Thesis theme.

  • Kimberly Castleberry Sep 13, 2011, 3:26 pm

Hey Jim great tutorial on setting up a sitemap. Slightly different plugin than I recommend but it gets the job done for sure. Love all the trainings you’re doing as you know I’m a strong wordpress advocate! I have an updated post on the blog today about the vulnerability issues we discussed prior as well. Thanks for all you do!

      Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

A lot of people ask which one I like better of the two XML Sitemap generating plugins that are most popular. I did a Google Search seeing if anyone did a post comparing the two and couldn’t find one. I think the BWP Sitemap generator gives the user some more controls and options. Do you have any other thoughts?
I will get to your link on the ReTweet Button, soon. Thanks for letting me know what’s going on with it. I’ll leave that P.S. up there for now so others might benefit from it too!

      Hope all is well!

Excellent tutorial Jim! I know I installed a sitemap plugin in several months ago, but now that I understand it a bit better I’m going to check it out either make sure it’s set up right, or install this plug in and “upgrade.” I actually bookmarked your tutorial on YouTube to go back and reference. Thanks!

    • jupiterjim Sep 18, 2011, 12:56 am

Thanks for the positive feedback! Now, I just reminding you to go back and watch the video on this because it is so important to your SEO that it gets done right!

      Keep coming back!

  • Hi Jim,

I’m using the Google Sitemap Generator, like a few others here. It works great v– I’ve used it for ages. Anything you’d offer on using one over the other?

    • jupiterjim Sep 18, 2011, 12:54 am

Great Question, they are both good plugins. After you posted this question, I posted an answer to the same question just above your comment. Thanks for commenting on my blog post!

  • Willena Flewelling Sep 14, 2011, 2:29 am

    Hi Jim,

Great video! It’s very clear and simple for anyone to follow. Like many others who have commented, I am using the Google XML Sitemaps plugin… and also like others, I am curious as to whether you have any pros or cons for using one over the other?

    • jupiterjim Sep 18, 2011, 12:50 am

I like the BWP better because it was updated much more quickly after the last WordPress update and I believe it gives you more options in creating your XML Sitemap. Whichever version you use, they are both good, just make sure they are updated in a timely fashion along with WordPress.

  • Raena Lynn Sep 14, 2011, 2:20 pm

The Google XML Sitemap is one of the best ways to bring in traffic, because it allows your site to actually get traffic from Google, because they can find your pages.
